A Sweet Halloween

Carina excitedly waited in the living room of her house, for her father and mother to finish getting ready to take her out for trick-or-treating, today was Saturday, October 31st, which only meant one thing…

HALLOWEEN!

She enjoyed Halloween as much as she enjoyed Christmas and Easter, so it was no surprise that she was up at 8 AM that morning, making sure that her Esmeralda costume was ready along with her tambourine and treat bucket with her name embroidered on it.

Soon her mother came out of the master bedroom and Carina gasped, her mother looked positively beautiful in her medieval princess costume, soon her father came out and join them, he was dressed as a Roman soldier and was looking very handsome. “Mommy, may we go out trick-or-treating now?” Carina asked politely, she stood up and picking up her tambourine she shook it excitedly. Jamie, Carina’s father, laughed. His rich laugh sent chills down his wife’s spine. “Yes darling, we can go now, but put on your shoes while we’re on the streets, I know that gypsies didn’t wear shoes back then, but my little one will not have cold sore feet tonight after we trick-or-treat.”

Carina grabbed her black slip-on shoes and put them on, before they ventured out into the crisp October evening, they first headed down Tamari Street, where Carina spotted her ‘grandfather’ Tom and her best friend Elena, Elena was dressed as Anna from the popular movie ‘Frozen’ and she looked absolutely adorable. The two friends deiced to make a play date the next day to trade candy and watch movies. After saying goodbye to Tom and Elena, the three went to each house on Tamari Street that had their lights on but skipped those with their lights off unless a candy dish was sitting on the porch.

Soon they had trick-or-treated every house for three whole blocks, only three houses and the house of Carina’s favorite uncle and aunt. “I hope uncle Erik and Aunt Euthie have candy!” Carina said excitedly as they walked towards the home where Erik and Euthie lived, Cassie smiled but Jamie felt a bit of unease creep into his system.

And rightly so


Suddenly as they approach the walkway, a shadow dropped from an old oak treat, causing Cassie to scream.

“A CORPSE!”

Sure enough the corpse of a man, suspended in a noose was swinging weirdly from a sturdy branch of the oak, but as Carina beamed on it with her flashlight (which she’d stored in her bucket) she breathed out slowly. “It’s okay mommy, it’s only fake. But I think someone’s trying to scare us.” Stowing her flashlight she continued up the walkway while Jamie and Cassie followed behind her, the lights on the veranda were off and Carina waited for her parents before knocking on the door. It slowly creaked open and they entered. The house was deathly still, but something ominous seemed to hang in the air. Suddenly Carina jumped and screamed as something lunged at her “UNCLE ERIK! HELP US!” she screamed in terror. The lights turned on and in the doorway stood Erik shaking his head and tutting at Euthie who was on the floor with Jamie’s fake soldier sword pointed at her neck.
“Darling, what have I told you about scaring Carina?” he said in an exasperated voice, Euthie however, smirked. “Oh dry up, she didn’t die. It is the day of Frights you know.” Erik shook his head and hugged his niece, stroking her blond hair lightly “Be not afraid mon cheire, your aunt was just enjoying the one night she may have fun and get away with it.”
Euthie stood up, pushing Jamie’s sword out of her way, she was only having fun. Carina smiled at her uncle before going over to her aunt, looking up at her she asked “Was that fake hanging corpse your idea too?”

“So what if it was? Your beloved uncle did the same thing to some people who didn’t listen to him. I just copied that for kicks.” Euthie said indifferently.

Carina shook her head, “You nearly scared mommy to death.” She said with a sigh “Now you owe us double candy.”

Euthie rolled her eyes and gave Carina three giant Hershy bars. After spending some time with the two, Carina and her parents headed home, guided by the full moon’s serene glow, half way home however, Carina seemed ready to fall asleep and actually did on Jamie’s shoulder as he carried his little Gypsy Princess home to bed. After tucking the little girl in and putting her candy in the pantry so that she and Elena could divide it up the next day, Jamie and Cassie cuddled on the couch in their pajamas, thinking about the wonderful night they had.
